How Much Does Professional Video Editing Cost in Chicago?
It is one of the first questions businesses ask, and it is a fair one. Video editing is a real investment, and you want to know what you are getting into before you start a project.
The short answer: professional video editing in the Chicago area typically ranges from a few hundred dollars for a basic cut to several thousand for a full corporate production. What you pay depends on what you need.
Here is a clear breakdown of what affects the cost, what surprises clients most, and what is worth every dollar.
What Drives the Cost of Video Editing
Length and Complexity of the Final Video
A 90-second brand video and a 10-minute training module are very different editing jobs. Longer videos mean more footage to review, more decisions to make, and more time in post-production. Complexity drives cost just as much as length.
The Footage Review Process
This is something clients consistently underestimate. When you hand us footage to edit, the first job is reviewing every clip before making a single cut. We might go into a factory for an eight-hour shoot and come back with 50 or more clips. All of it gets watched and logged. We need to understand what we have, how it was shot, and where the story is hiding before we can build anything.
Footage shot to a script and footage where someone wandered around a facility for a day are completely different editing challenges. The review and organization stage takes real time, and it is where a professional edit earns its keep.

Animation and Motion Graphics
This is the line item that surprises clients most, and understandably so. Most people assume motion graphics are quick to produce. They are not.
“We can spend eight hours on a shoot and come back with 50 clips. During that same eight hours, our motion graphics team might produce one five-second clip due to complexity. Clients are often surprised to find out that motion graphics and animation can cost more than a full day of shooting.”
Whether built in After Effects or with AI tools, every graphic needs to look consistent with the footage, match brand standards, and integrate cleanly with everything else in the edit. It is detailed, time-consuming work, and the results show when it is done right.
Color Grading
This is a line item that sometimes gets cut to save budget, and it is one we always encourage clients to keep. A professional colorist evening out footage and giving it a stylized look typically costs between $400 and $1,000. On a video shot across multiple locations with varying lighting conditions, that investment can be the difference between footage that looks inconsistent and a finished product that feels intentional and polished.
It is a relatively small addition to most project budgets. The difference it makes is not small at all.
What Actually Causes Projects to Cost More Than Expected
In our experience, budget overruns almost always come from one of two places. The first is things clients notice in the edit that they missed on set. A calendar on the wall of a car shop that does not fit the image they want to project. A factory worker not wearing proper PPE. These are things that should be caught during the shoot, which is exactly why we put monitors on set and encourage clients to watch the footage in real time. The time to fix those issues is on location, not in post-production.
The second is add-ons that were not part of the original scope. Logo replacements, custom animations, additional versions for new platforms. These are legitimate requests and we are glad to handle them. They just need to be scoped and priced separately.

What to Expect at Each Level
Basic Edit (Under $500)
Simple cuts with minimal color correction and basic audio cleanup. Fine for internal content but generally not what you want representing your brand to clients or prospects.
Professional Edit ($500 to $2,500)
Solid post-production for a single video including color grading, sound design, motion graphics, and platform-ready delivery. A good fit for most corporate marketing or communication videos.
Full-Service Post-Production ($2,500 and up)
For longer or more complex projects, multi-deliverable packages, or content that needs to perform across multiple platforms. Companies in Aurora, Lisle, Elk Grove Village, and across Chicagoland use this level for anything client-facing or high-stakes.
Safety and compliance training videos typically fall in this tier - the stakes are too high for anything less. See how our training video production is priced and scoped.
